Coercive Control, 2025, oil on aluminium panel, 50x40cm (65x55cm with frame).
This self-portrait confronts the insidious nature of coercive control; a form of abuse that erodes dignity, autonomy and self-respect. At 21, I entered my first relationship with a 35 year old man, believing I had found love. Instead, I was gaslighted, isolated from family and friends, and controlled. For six years I felt like a puppet, unable to break free.
Creating this work is an act of reclamation and a reminder that respect is not optional; it is the foundation of every safe and equal relationship.
